Summer School in Europe 2027: Why Most Families Start with the UK
Last updated: 10 October 2026
Short answer: Planning summer school in Europe in 2027? The UK is the most established base — our 56 partner courses run £3,595–£12,590. Switzerland, France and Spain are strong alternatives with different fees and visas. Here’s how to compare destinations, costs and timelines so you choose without overpaying.
Why the UK is the natural start for summer school in Europe
The UK is where academic summer schools took root and where the most campuses sit. You get English-native teaching, the famous university towns, a boarding setup refined over decades, and — for families flying from China or elsewhere in Asia — the most polished airport transfers and 24-hour safeguarding. Besides our 56 UK courses, Immerse runs academic programmes at three UK campuses: London, Cambridge and Oxford, covering roughly age 8 through to university preparation.
If it’s your first time looking at summer school in Europe, the UK is the lowest-risk place to begin.

What summer school in Europe costs
Our 56 UK partner courses for 2027 span £3,595–£12,590. The full tier-by-tier breakdown — entry, standard and premium bands — lives in our fees guide, and we keep it updated as schools confirm rates.
Mainland Europe is harder to pin to one number. From the families we’ve helped compare, boarding there often sits above the UK entry tier, Switzerland especially, but we’d rather you confirm each school than trust a rounded guess from us. One thing is constant everywhere: flights, visa, insurance and pocket money are never included in tuition.
Visas: the UK and Schengen are two different systems
This is where families quietly lose the most time. Since Brexit, a summer school in Europe that mixes the UK and the continent means two visa applications, not one.
- UK: a Standard Visitor visa, separate from Schengen (see the UK visa guidance).
- France, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany: one Schengen visa covers them all.
- Build in 4–6 weeks. We’ve seen families book the course first, then discover the visa timeline leaves no room — start early.
When to apply: the timeline that saves the summer
| Lead time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 9–12 months before | Shortlist countries and goals; check age bands and English level |
| 6–8 months before | Apply to first-choice campuses — good UK campuses often close by Feb–March, and early rates are usually lower. Get refund terms in writing |
| 4–6 months before | Start visas. UK and Schengen are separate, so allow 4–6 weeks for each if you mix them |
| ~3 months before | Book flights only after (or alongside, with buffer for) the visa decision |
Language
Most programmes — the UK, Ireland and Netherlands especially — run in English, with a placement test on day one. France and Spain lean into language immersion if that’s the point of the trip. Don’t sign up for a level you’re not ready for; the wrong band just means paying to repeat it.
How to choose without overpaying
The right school is the one that fits the goal. A student trying to lift their IELTS is a different search from one eyeing a specific university. Once the goal is clear, the rest is discipline: book early, compare the per-week price rather than the headline total, and — the step most people skip — add the flight and visa to the fee before you say yes. Then match the age and English band, and get the refund terms in writing, because visas do get refused.
Common questions about summer school in Europe
Q: What’s the shortest summer school in Europe?
Usually two weeks minimum; one-week options are rare and thin on experience.
Q: Can a child with weak English still go?
UK, Ireland and Netherlands programmes offer placement and language support, but basic communication is needed. Pure language-immersion tracks have lower barriers.
Q: Can I get a Schengen and a UK visa together?
No. Two separate systems. Do the UK first, then Schengen, and allow 4–6 weeks.
Q: Is Switzerland the most expensive?
Usually among the priciest — its boarding tradition lifts prices. Better value tends to sit in other mainland countries.
Q: If a visa is refused, do I get the fee back?
Depends on the school. Confirm refund terms in writing before paying.

A summer school is only worth it if it fits the goal, not the brochure. Pick the country and age band first, match it to the table, then add flights and visa to the tuition before you commit.
