2 · The school

Lakeland University Japan, Tokyo

Classes take place at Lakeland University Japan, the Tokyo campus of an accredited American university, in a brand-new building with high-tech classrooms, creative lounges and student facilities.

The campus is in Ryogoku, Tokyo’s traditional sumo district – one of the city’s safest and most peaceful neighbourhoods, five minutes’ walk from the station and close to all the major sights.

All classes are taught in English by experienced university professors, so no Japanese is needed to join.

Accommodation

Most students live with a carefully vetted Japanese host family, with home-cooked breakfast and dinner every day. Students travel to campus by train – about an hour each way – which quickly builds confidence and independence on Tokyo’s world-class rail network. 3 · The summer programme

Learn Japanese, then explore Tokyo

Mornings are university classes, Monday to Friday. Every student takes Elementary Japanese – conversation, greetings, gestures, etiquette, hiragana and katakana – plus one elective each week, finishing with an assessment on Friday.

Afternoons turn Tokyo into the classroom, with expert-led workshops and visits across the city, and evenings are spent with the host family.

Elective courses (choose 2)
Business and leadership · hospitality leadership and strategy; international business
Global communication · intercultural communication; leadership communication; media literacy
Japanese studies · manga and anime history; art and architecture; anthropology; music; environmental history

Each elective needs at least 15 students to run.

Certificates

Students receive a signed university Certificate of Completion, plus digital micro-credentials in Japanese language and manners and in their two electives – useful for university applications and personal portfolios.
