What Is Included in Summer School Fees? The Honest Breakdown

What is included in summer school fees: students in a UK summer school classroom at Charterhouse

Last updated: 15 October 2026

Short answer: at a well-run UK summer school the fee covers tuition, accommodation, all meals, activities, excursions, course materials, a report and certificate, travel and medical insurance, laundry, and airport transfers on published dates. It usually does not cover international flights, visa fees, pocket money, out-of-hours transfers, or optional extras such as exams and academies.

Parents comparing two UK summer schools usually compare the headline number and nothing else — then the extras arrive. We pulled the real inclusions pages from four established UK providers, plus our own programme, so you can see what is included in summer school fees before you pay a deposit, and what will show up on your card afterwards.

What is included in summer school fees: the standard UK list

Across well-run UK providers, this is what is included in summer school fees as standard:

  • Accommodation — boarding on campus, in school houses or halls, with staff on site
  • All meals — full board, including packed lunches on excursion days
  • Activities and social programme — sports, arts, evening events, club time
  • Excursions and attraction entry — commonly one full-day plus two half-day trips a week
  • Course materials — textbooks, worksheets, lab or studio supplies where relevant
  • Report and certificate — an end-of-course report and a completion certificate
  • Travel and medical insurance — check the limit and the excess, not just the word “insurance”
  • Laundry service — usually weekly
  • Airport transfers — on designated dates and within published time windows only
  • 24-hour emergency line and, for visa students, a visa invitation letter

What is included in summer school fees: the five costs that catch parents out

These five sit outside what is included in summer school fees as standard at almost every provider:/n

  1. International flights. Never included, at any provider we know of. Budget them separately and early.
  2. Out-of-hours and non-standard transfers. More Than English charges £395 each way from Heathrow and £275 from Birmingham outside the published windows; British Summer School charges £100 for a transfer on a non-standard day. These are the most common surprise on a final invoice.
  3. Pocket money. Providers such as More Than English suggest £50–£75 a week. Schools do not hold it unless you ask them to, so agree a system before departure.
  4. Insurance gaps. Shrewsbury’s fee explicitly excludes personal travel insurance, and some programmes exclude medical cover altogether. Read the policy limit and the excess — a low-limit policy is not real cover.
  5. Optional extras. Exam courses run £350–£500 at British Summer School; specialist academies and pro-options run £195–£900 a week; London experiences run £350–£1,250. Decide in advance which of these your child actually wants.

What is included in summer school fees: how to compare two quotes

This is the method we use whenever a family asks us what is included in summer school fees across two or three schools:/n/n- Convert everything to a weekly figure, including one-off charges, so you are comparing the same unit.

  • Count the taught hours per week and the staff ratio. More Than English publishes 25 hours at 1:4; a cheaper quote with 15 hours at 1:12 is not cheaper.
  • Count the excursions. One full-day plus two half-day trips a week is the standard to beat.
  • List the exclusions and add them up. Flights, transfers outside windows, pocket money, exams, extras.
  • Check the refund terms before you pay the deposit — they differ far more than the fees do.

If you would rather not do that arithmetic yourself, send us the two quotes and we will break them down line by line, free of charge.

What is included in summer school fees: our own programme, line by line

Because what is included in summer school fees matters far more than the headline price, here is our own programme, line by line. Our China programme, From Steppe to Silk Road (12–25 July 2027, 40 places), is priced all-in at £2,880 for 14 days and 13 nights. It includes accommodation, all meals, high-speed rail between Beijing, the Ordos grasslands and Xi’an, every entrance fee, the English-taught cultural programme, full supervision, in-country accident insurance of RMB 300,000, and Capital Airport transfers on the published arrival and departure times. It does not include international flights, international travel insurance, visa fees or pocket money. Our published booking terms set out the same inclusions, the payment schedule (balance due by 1 May) and the cancellation rules in full.

What is included in summer school fees: common questions

Q: Are flights included in the fee?

No. Every UK provider we work with excludes international flights. Book them as soon as dates are confirmed — July fares rise sharply from spring.

Q: Is travel insurance included?

Usually yes, but always check. Bede’s and British Summer School include student travel and medical insurance; Shrewsbury explicitly excludes personal travel insurance. Check the policy limit, the excess, and whether it covers your child’s nationality.

Q: How much pocket money should we send?

£50–£75 a week is the usual guidance for UK residential programmes. Agree with the school whether staff will hold it, and send a card rather than cash where possible.

Q: Are airport transfers always included?

Only on designated dates and within published time windows. British Summer School includes them for all residential courses; More Than English includes them within qualifying times; Bede’s covers Heathrow, Gatwick, London City and St Pancras on set dates.

Q: What happens if we arrive outside the transfer window?

Expect to pay £100–£395 each way, or book a hotel near the airport for the night and travel in the morning. This is usually cheaper and far less stressful for a tired teenager.

Q: Do the fees include a report or a certificate?

Bede’s, More Than English and British Summer School all include a report and a completion certificate. Ask to see a sample report before you book — it tells you how seriously the school takes assessment.
