Founded in 1407, Oswestry School is one of the oldest independent schools in England. In Summer 2027 we run three specialist one-week courses for international students aged 8–18 — Art, Culture & Literature; Politics & Leadership; and Science & Economics — each a complete, self-contained immersive learning experience.
Each course runs for one week (Wednesday arrival, Tuesday departure) and is built around a single theme: mornings are devoted to thematic seminars and academic English skills, afternoons to workshops, visits and collaborative project work, and evenings to debates, drama, film nights and other boarding community activities. Students live, learn and socialise entirely in an immersive English environment, meet new friends from around the world, and make the most of every opportunity to improve their English.
Students are grouped by age and English level and taught in small classes (maximum 12, average 10). At the end of each course every student receives an academic report, a certificate of attendance and photo and video evidence of their work. The proportion of students from any one nationality is carefully controlled to ensure a genuinely international language environment. The three themes can be booked individually or combined across consecutive weeks.

About Oswestry School
Oswestry School was founded by David Holbache in 1407 — a royal attorney under Henry IV, Member of Parliament for Shropshire and friend of Owain Glyndŵr. His aim was to educate the children of the Welsh Marches and to bring the two neighbouring communities closer together. That spirit of inclusion and openness is still at the heart of the school more than six centuries on.
The school sits in Oswestry, Shropshire (Upper Brook Street, Oswestry, Shropshire SY11 2TL), on about 55 acres at the northern edge of the market town and within easy walking distance of the town centre. It is a non-selective co-educational school for pupils aged 4–18, with boarders from all over the world, making it a genuinely international community.
The school motto is Non scholae sed vitae — not for school, but for life.
Academics and destinations
In a non-selective environment the school’s public examination results consistently rank among the best in Shropshire: A-Level pass rates have long stood at 97–100%, with around 90% of GCSE entries achieving A*–C. Alumni progress to the UK’s leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Warwick, the LSE, UCL, Manchester, Leeds and Bristol.
Whole-person education
The Good Schools Guide describes it as a small, traditional and distinctly individual British school where a family feel and a close community give every pupil confidence and stability — a home from home. The school runs an active CCF, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and community service groups, and in recent years has taken pupils on expeditions to the Himalayas, the Andes and the Atlas Mountains.
